Summary

A deliciously creepy horror novel with a story line inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion。。。
Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her。 But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life。

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine。 When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world。

The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget。

4。5/5!!! bumping it up for thomas cresswell <3

I knew I was going to enjoy this book from the very first chapter。 Audrey Rose, Thomas Cresswell, and the entire mystery come together so well with a mix of history, fiction, crime, and subtle romance that just dances on the edge of darkness。 Definitely my favorite book of the series。

This book is so bad it's good。 I really enjoyed sending screenshots to my friends。 We were crying。The book itself is wildly historically inaccurate, the writing is amateur, the characters are flat, and the plot is both ludicrous AND cliche。 Which is, you know, a feat。 It's also a prime example of a 21st c character dropped into an 'historical' novel。。。 which isn't historical anyway, so I'm not sure why it matters, I guess。 And many scenes just move。。。 awkwardly? Like there doesn't seem much on-page logic。Also, personal gripe: if the main point is the romance (hint: it is), then why is the first kiss SO AWFUL? I had to look away out of embarrassment。 Jesus。 (Also it's been said but the love interest is a very bad ripoff of Sherlock Holmes。)Anyway, 1/5 definitely will read the second one。 So bad it's good。FINAL THOUGHTS: if you're writing an 'historical' novel, and allow your character to come up with something historically before their time (like say, the patent (Midnight's Bargain), or guess the exact nature of the next crime (Stalking JtR), that's not showing your character is clever。 It's showing lAZY WRITING。 Fin。 。。。more

for me a good mystery book all depends on the big final ending。 with that being said, this book ending was underwhelming for me。 it wasn't grand。 not as twisted as I like it to be, didn't make me go WHAAT?!?!。 Overall it was just kind of meh。。。BUT。。。。did i enjoy it? yes i did actually。 i like the setting, the character was alright *especially Thomas which by himself already earn 5 shining stars from me*, and the story itself was easy to follow along and didn't drag on unnecessarily。 4,5 star but for me a good mystery book all depends on the big final ending。 with that being said, this book ending was underwhelming for me。 it wasn't grand。 not as twisted as I like it to be, didn't make me go WHAAT?!?!。 Overall it was just kind of meh。。。BUT。。。。did i enjoy it? yes i did actually。 i like the setting, the character was alright *especially Thomas which by himself already earn 5 shining stars from me*, and the story itself was easy to follow along and didn't drag on unnecessarily。 4,5 star but easily rounded up to a 5。 can't wait to read the 2nd instalment。 。。。more

2。5 i think i just have to give up on kerri maniscalco books。 i didn't like the kingdom of the wicked, and this book also definitely did not do it for me。 i think her writing style is too "tell" instead of "show" for my taste。 for example, thomas and audrey rose seem to hate each other for most of the novel, but then (SPOILER ALERT!!!), we're suddenly told towards the end that they love each other。 we are barely shown any relationship development between them, and moments that could have been ex 2。5 i think i just have to give up on kerri maniscalco books。 i didn't like the kingdom of the wicked, and this book also definitely did not do it for me。 i think her writing style is too "tell" instead of "show" for my taste。 for example, thomas and audrey rose seem to hate each other for most of the novel, but then (SPOILER ALERT!!!), we're suddenly told towards the end that they love each other。 we are barely shown any relationship development between them, and moments that could have been expanded to show this development are instead reduced to brief, passing mentions。 also, for a book that is supposedly feminist, there's a lot of internalized "i'm not like other girls" misogyny going on here that i just could not vibe with。 audrey rose likes clothes and makeup, which i appreciated, but she still seems to shit on other girls for the topics they discuss or even wearing too much makeup??? idk it's nuanced but overall i was not a fan。 i thought the mystery aspect of the book was okay, but it was pretty obvious to me whole the culprit was early on。 this is written for a younger audience, so i understand there will be a certain simplicity to the mystery, but i think it could have been done a little more subtly。 my final gripe: thomas cresswell。 why does anyone like him。 literally why。 he's insufferable and rude and not in a charming, fun way like some other love interests (read: will herondale)。 i think the rude, arrogant love interest can be really fun and charming if done correctly, but thomas barely shows any character development throughout the book, so it's hard to understand why audrey rose goes from hating him to (allegedly?) being in love with him。 i think they could have had a really compelling relationship arc, but neither character was developed enough over the course of the book to make it believable。 i was pretty disappointed because a lot of people love this book, but it ultimately just wasn't for me。 。。。more

The Sherlock and Watson vibes are strong with Audrey Rose being Watson。 I enjoyed the mystery and the setup, even if the killer was predictable, but when it was being laid out I realized I had missed and had dismissed so many pieces of evidence。 Audrey Rose has hints of 'not like other girls' in her character, but it isn't enough to make her unlikeable, and I found her charming and funny。 The Sherlock and Watson vibes are strong with Audrey Rose being Watson。 I enjoyed the mystery and the setup, even if the killer was predictable, but when it was being laid out I realized I had missed and had dismissed so many pieces of evidence。 Audrey Rose has hints of 'not like other girls' in her character, but it isn't enough to make her unlikeable, and I found her charming and funny。 。。。more

I been wanting to read this one for a while now。 Love that cover。 Oh and the story sounded good too。 The first half I'd give a 3 and the second half a 4。 From the mystery, to the characters, setting and pace, it was an interesting read。 Looking forward to the next book in this series。 I been wanting to read this one for a while now。 Love that cover。 Oh and the story sounded good too。 The first half I'd give a 3 and the second half a 4。 From the mystery, to the characters, setting and pace, it was an interesting read。 Looking forward to the next book in this series。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the story, however, I hated the pacing。 I felt like some things were too abrupt and other things were too drawn out。

Heard such great things about this book but I just did not like it。 I found myself cringing at the teenage angst and constant insecurities our main character struggled with in her internal dialogue。 I also pretty much guessed the ending at the onset of the book。 I guess I wasn't in the right mind frame nor feeling patient enough for this YA book。 Heard such great things about this book but I just did not like it。 I found myself cringing at the teenage angst and constant insecurities our main character struggled with in her internal dialogue。 I also pretty much guessed the ending at the onset of the book。 I guess I wasn't in the right mind frame nor feeling patient enough for this YA book。 。。。more

I picked this book up because I've been on a YA murder mystery/thriller kick lately。 To say I was disappointed with this book would be an understatement。 This book was pretty slow and I found myself forcing myself to finish certain parts。 This didn't really have the mystery vibes that I was looking for, it seemed like everything fell into place too easily and I didn't really connect to any of the characters。 I'll probably read the second book in the series to see if it is any better, but not hop I picked this book up because I've been on a YA murder mystery/thriller kick lately。 To say I was disappointed with this book would be an understatement。 This book was pretty slow and I found myself forcing myself to finish certain parts。 This didn't really have the mystery vibes that I was looking for, it seemed like everything fell into place too easily and I didn't really connect to any of the characters。 I'll probably read the second book in the series to see if it is any better, but not hopeful for the rest of the series。 。。。more

So。。。。I did not like this book。 I admit that it isn't really to my tastes, and so picking this one up on a whim was definitely a risk。 But that being said, I just couldn't get into this one。 The characters felt flimsy in their creation, the narration was like an odd parody of victorian English speak rather than an actual interpretation of it。 And the plot was just so。。。predictable。 I knew what the big plot twist was going to be probably by the 40 or so page mark, and then I had to wait until the So。。。。I did not like this book。 I admit that it isn't really to my tastes, and so picking this one up on a whim was definitely a risk。 But that being said, I just couldn't get into this one。 The characters felt flimsy in their creation, the narration was like an odd parody of victorian English speak rather than an actual interpretation of it。 And the plot was just so。。。predictable。 I knew what the big plot twist was going to be probably by the 40 or so page mark, and then I had to wait until the very end for it to be revealed to me officially。 The ending was disappointing, and ultimately I will not be continuing with this series。 I can see why people loved it, but it is certainly not for me。 。。。more

Ameeee en totalidad este libro, la pizca de romance hace un gran papel y me encanta!

This is the first book I read last January。 I couldn’t explain how much the plot twist amazed me, even though I already suspected who Jack the Ripper was。 I didn’t really expect it when I first picked up the book。 I also loved Cressworth’s team work so much! If you’re into forensic and solving crime, this is the book for you! ♥︎

Honestly I’m sad that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would。 The story in general was interesting, I mean I love everything related to forensics and criminology, but I didn’t really care for the characters? And it was kind of boring at times, The ending was a bit predictable and I felt like the romance was rushed and out of nowhere。 I don’t know whether I’m going to pick up the second book or not。 Maybe I will

Listened to this on audiobook, which I thoroughly recommend。All in all this was enjoyable, but I found myself extremely bored throughout 80% on the novel。 There was very little moments of excitement or interesting moments for me, and even the final act was underwhelming。I appreciate the writing style, just wasn't very interested in the plot。3。25/5 Listened to this on audiobook, which I thoroughly recommend。All in all this was enjoyable, but I found myself extremely bored throughout 80% on the novel。 There was very little moments of excitement or interesting moments for me, and even the final act was underwhelming。I appreciate the writing style, just wasn't very interested in the plot。3。25/5 。。。more

I finished Stalking Jack the Ripper today and I liked it。 A lot。 I knew it was historical fiction and was falling in the mystery category, however, I did not expect it to be horror。The book is narrated by Audrey Rose, who's a lord's daughter and it's expected of her to be interested in things befitting her station, like tea parties or gossip。 However, defying her father and society's expectations, she usually slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study forensic medicine。After a series of grues I finished Stalking Jack the Ripper today and I liked it。 A lot。 I knew it was historical fiction and was falling in the mystery category, however, I did not expect it to be horror。The book is narrated by Audrey Rose, who's a lord's daughter and it's expected of her to be interested in things befitting her station, like tea parties or gossip。 However, defying her father and society's expectations, she usually slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study forensic medicine。After a series of gruesome murders take place, Audrey finds herself more involved in the case。A serial killer, dark secrets and horrid murders, you'll find all these in this book。• Starting from the beginning, Audrey Rose caught my attention from the first chapter, she was a smart girl with a set in mind。 Throughout the book, the hatred she harbors toward the society's rules is quite obvious, after all, she was interested in pursuing a man's vocation。 This being a "crime" in the people's eyes。I admired her, even tho there were moments when she, as Thomas pointed out more than once, was letting her emotions override her rational thoughts。• Thomas, besides being a handsome gentleman with a great sense of humor, was a young man with a brilliant mind。 Never missing a thing, seeing clues where other saw nothing, reading a person was for him as easy as a book。 I was impressed by him and his quick thinking, I can't wait to see him more in the next books!• Some people would expect romance from this book, and there are some romantic scenes, but the main plot is focused on the crimes, the investigation。• The plot was what caught me by surprise, as I said, I knew it will be about a big mystery。 I was so into the story, trying to see what other's were missing, kind of failing 。。。 I had my suspicions that, in the end, proved to be right (I still regret I was right)。Following these characters taking part in this investigation was so intriguing, I felt like being part of the team, also, the bodies of the victims and the crime scenes were described in gruesome details, but I liked it 😂 。。。more

This took me forever to finish。 I found it sooo slow。 The last third or so picked up a bit。 Jack the Ripper’s identity was also painfully obvious。。。to everyone except the smartest characters apparently。 I’ll give the next one a try, but if it’s just as slow I’ll probably bail on the rest。

I liked the mystery and murder of this book but the MC and her kinda boyfriend drove me insane。 Especially the MC。 She never had any adrenaline in crucial so she just stood there and she was a big jerk to all of her friends。 Hopefully the MC gets better as the series goes on。

Final Score: 4。5/5My God, this was an emotional rollercoster。In this story we are introduced to the life of Audrey Rose Wadsworth, a girl who lives on the Victorian Ages and dreams of becoming a doctor (Even when woman aren't suposse to do anything more than marry and take care of the children) nonentheless, things quickly take a sudden turn when a serial killer starts to murder innocent women around, going by the name of "Jack the Ripper"。 The story is probably one of the best books I've read t Final Score: 4。5/5My God, this was an emotional rollercoster。In this story we are introduced to the life of Audrey Rose Wadsworth, a girl who lives on the Victorian Ages and dreams of becoming a doctor (Even when woman aren't suposse to do anything more than marry and take care of the children) nonentheless, things quickly take a sudden turn when a serial killer starts to murder innocent women around, going by the name of "Jack the Ripper"。 The story is probably one of the best books I've read this year。 Audrey Rose, our main character, is everything I love to see in female characters: She is ambitious, gentle and determinate to achieve her goals, even when that means defying expectations society has put on top of her。 She is smart but can also be very naive, which only makes her character way more relatable; then, of course, we have my new book boyfriend, Thomas Cresswell。 He is just。。。damn! He is perfect and the only thing I wanted was for them both to kiss (Ot, at least, let me kiss him)。The plot, how slowly the clues were fitting into place, was absolutely amazing。 I love how the author managed to truly tell us the story of such a famous serial killer withouth romantizacing his actions, as well as the pain the families of these butchered women had to go throught。 The plot twist, holy cow! I didn't saw that coming and the ending had me bawling at 10 p。m for HOURS。The only reason why I don't give this a five stars rating is probably because the first few chapters were a little slow paced, but the rest of this book is magnificent。Highly recommended。 。。。more

Man, this book 🙃 I can't say I had any expectations from it tbh。 It's just a popular book that was recommended a lot of bookstagram。 So I read it。 And I have thoughts。 I'll just go for a quick review here。 THINGS I LIKED - the plot and story, which I think is very very interesting- all the forensic science, which makes for such an exciting read - the way the author brought out old London so vividly through the pages- the idea of the book series is commendable, I think it's unique THINGS I DIDN Man, this book 🙃 I can't say I had any expectations from it tbh。 It's just a popular book that was recommended a lot of bookstagram。 So I read it。 And I have thoughts。 I'll just go for a quick review here。 THINGS I LIKED - the plot and story, which I think is very very interesting- all the forensic science, which makes for such an exciting read - the way the author brought out old London so vividly through the pages- the idea of the book series is commendable, I think it's unique THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE - the characters lol。 They're literally so bland and one dimensional。 They just didn't have any depth。 The MC was you typical 'im not like other girls' and the love interest was your typical basic 'hot guy with snarky comments and trauma'。 I'm not kidding。 - the romance yikes。 I feel like we could've done well without the romance and focus more on the killings maybe? Or the subtle hints? Idk。 But I wasn't fond of the romance。 It felt forced, too quick, no chemistry, no gradual build up。 Just random flirting and boom there's love。 - the mystery lmao。 I could laugh at it。 It was so predictable, right from the beginning I swear。 I don't mind tho, but it was kinda underwhelming in this book。 The climax wasn't as great or revealing; I'm pretty sure everyone can figure out what the hell was going on lol。 - the writing was not good。 It was cringy aru parts and just alright。 I felt like the pacing was a bit off too, like it went too fast and didn't give enough time for the characters to grow。 I think that's all。 I won't say I absolutely hated this book, it was simply okay。 I didn't feel anything strongly for any of the characters or the ships。 But that said, I do feel like the author has very interesting ideas and plotlines and this first book just lacked execution。 I'm looking forward to the rest of the series tbh, to see how the adventure proceeds。 。。。more
